Our Work
Food Shift drives equitable, climate-smart food recovery by rescuing quality edible surplus food and nourishing our neighbors. We partner with schools, businesses, and local governments to reduce wasted food and expand community food access through SB 1383 education. Our food recovery program is our platform for intergenerational learning and apprenticeships to overcome employment discrimination.
Food Recovery
Operation Together is our foundational feed recovery program redirecting surplus edible food to nourish our neighbors. Rather than delivering the food to individuals ourselves, we partner with local organizations on the frontlines who help us steward the food we recover to immediately impact their communities. Through this partnership, we can adapt to the unique needs of each community.
Food is more than nourishment; it carries culture, care, and climate impact. When good food is discarded, we lose the chance to share resources, reduce emissions, and strengthen resilience. Schools, businesses, and public agencies all play a role in keeping food in use and out of landfills.

Unique Approach
We choose to look at the best of what is before us: in how we do food recovery, how we build our team and with whom we partner. We go beyond traditional food recovery by addressing the intersections of food, climate justice, and equity. We engage with our neighbors deeply so we may gain insight and uplift them as community wisdom beyond our neighborhoods, globally. Our values of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) are not just aspirations: they dictate how we show up in and for the community.
SB 1383 Consulting
Food Shift partners with cities, counties, school districts and other entities to implement California’s Senate Bill 1383, a law that prioritizes the recovery of edible food and reduction of organic waste to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
We offer a wide range of services from providing technical assistance, compliance, and reporting guidance, to customized staff training on SB 1383 requirements.
We provide training in English, Spanish, Tagalog and Japanese, with written materials available in Hindi. Contact us for a free 30 min. consultation.

JEDI Training
Food Shift offers training and consulting services to establish organizational practices that arise from values of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI).
We offer these services because JEDI is at the heart of climate and food justice. We have adopted it as our foundation, underscoring all that we do. Our JEDI services include customizable workshops and project-based consulting services. Initial consultation (up to 60 minutes) included with a $100 donation: contact us so we understand your needs.
